Day 23 at Makers Academy

Birthday Greeter and Battle

This morning I started on the Birthday Greeter project I mentioned yesterday. I managed to get it working and looking nice by just after lunch, which I am very happy about! As I said it is quite a simple web app, but it still took a lot of work. Here is a look at it:

This is the homepage, you are prompted to enter your name and birthday.

So I enter my details in.

When you submit, you are taken to a page that tells you how many days there are until your birthday.

If your birthday is today like so:

You get a special page!

The form will also stop you from entering something wrong.

I am very happy with how this went. I was able to write 9 tests for the web app, and have 100% coverage. It works exactly as it should and looks pretty good too! The only thing I would like to work on is fixing it so you can only enter days that are in that month, for example at the moment you could enter in the 49th of June, which would then cause an error. I am not sure at the moment how I could limit that, so for now it is staying as is!

In the afternoon I finished going through battle a second time! It was a little better this time, although still heavily reliant on the walkthrough, which isn’t too surprising considering we have never done web apps before this week! We had a short workshop this morning on debugging errors in Capybara, the testing gem for html, and this was quite helpful for fixing errors I came across. The web app runs pretty much the same as it did yesterday, which is good I suppose, nothing went majorly wrong! I think tomorrow I will focus on practicals for the day so I feel more ready for the Friday challenge!
