Day 3 at Makers Academy

Command Line

Day 3 at Makers Academy was back to basics. All the flashy work we had done on Day 2 was gone, Day 3 was all about starting our training. The work we had to do on this day was all based in the command line, entering commands into the terminal to make things happen.

This was all new to me, I had never really used the terminal for anything, and had never used a Mac before, so at first trying to get used to it was weird. But now it all seems natural, so I guess it doesn’t take long to adapt

Our pair challenge for the day was to work through the Command Line Mystery, a murder mystery entirely contained within the terminal. This was really useful as we had to learn lots of commands in order to navigate through the files and clues to figure out what had happened and who had done it. We also had to commit to git every time we got past certain steps, although I made sure we did in a couple of extra places just in case.
It was pretty cool how much stuff you can do in the terminal, I wouldn’t have expected to be able to do most of the things we did, and even if it isn’t the most convenient or useful way to do it, it’s nice to know it’s possible. Some of the commands we learned I have used every day since so it was very helpful.

Here is the finished mystery, SPOILER ALERT!
