My First Website
Day 2 was the day we actually started coding! We were told on the Monday afternoon that we would be building our first functioning website on Day 2, using a mixture of CSS, Java, HTML and I am sure more that I have forgotten, and this was incredibly true.
We were given step by step instructions on how to do it, which were very clear. We were introduced to pair programming, where you take it in turns to be the ‘driver’ and ‘navigator’; one of you writes the code whilst the other watches and ensures you are not making any mistakes, not only in the line you are writing but overall in the code. We were in a 3 for this activity, so decided we would take 15 minutes each as the driver, while the other two navigated. By the afternoon we had created a beautiful website, which we then pushed to heroku. Here it is, my official first website.
As we had finished with a few hours to spare, we started looking into git, what it was, how it worked, and how it linked to GitHub.
When I got home, I ran through all the instructions again, but this time committing to git every time I did something meaningful, and pushing it to GitHub. This was really useful to me as the git steps really stuck in my mind after that. Here is website number 2 and the repo on GitHub.
Overall I think it was a really good day. It allowed us to get used to the tools we would be using, even if we didn’t understand most of what we were doing.
I was so proud of my website, I sent a link to my mum, my best friend, and my girlfriend, I could tell at this point I have made the right choice of career, and being a software developer will be a very fulfilling career for me.
