Day 1 at Makers Academy

Introductions

Day 1 was an introduction to Makers Academy and the 6 other people I would be completing the course with. 3 of them were from Tesco like me, and would be my colleagues after the 12 week course. At first though, as is pretty common, most of us were pretty quiet around each other, meeting for the first time. The day officially started around 10am, but being there a couple of hours early, we were able to chat to some of the Makers Academy apprentices who were further along in their course. They were able to give us some valuable knowledge, and told us about some of the projects we would be working on in the future. It was nice to hear how far they had come, when only 8 weeks ago they had no experience either.

The day itself included no coding. The morning was more focussed on discussing what Makers Academy is all about, their culture and how they teach. We received our laptops about midday and started the prepare them for the weeks ahead, installing everything we needed according to preparetocode.io! The afternoon was an opportunity for us to get to know each other a bit more, including a very entertaining attempt at a human knot. We also got introduced to all of the coaches who would be guiding us through our time at Makers.

Day 1 was not really what I expected, but was a nice calm introduction to what I am sure will be twelve very busy weeks.

Side note on travelling. I usually drive into work, its about an hour there and an hour back, 50 miles each way. I have got very used to this after 5 years in the office. This is the first time I have really had to commute via train and walk. Wow was I tired at the end of the day! My Fitbit doesn’t know what hit it, the 8000 step target has been obliterated every day since, apart from weekends where we both get a well needed rest!
